What is stainless steel, and how is it made?
Stainless steel is an iron alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content and a maximum of 1.2% carbon content that is very resistant to corrosion by acids or saltwater.
It was invented by Harry Brearley around 1912 and patented in 1913, who first produced it in Sheffield, England, during the First World War.
What are the four main types of stainless steel?
There are four main classes of stainless:
- Type 430 for general fabrication work
- Type 304 or A2 is low alloy steel, making it suitable for fabrication work but as resistant to corrosion as type 430.

How is stainless steel manufactured?
It is made from taking a stainless steel bar and pressure rolling it to make it as thin as possible. The thinner the stainless, the better its resistance to corrosion and lower fabrication costs because the machinery can be designed more simply.
When fabrication work makes up 56% by tonnage of all stainless steel products, it must be considered when producing stainless in volume.

Acerinox is the world’s largest producer of stainless steel. They produce more than the following three largest producers combined. China as a country produces the most steel in general. Both Stainless Steel and other forms of steel.
What is metal fabrication?
Metal fabrication is the process of building machines and structures from raw metal materials. Fabrication engineers and fabricators are in charge of designing, installing, and repairing large-scale industrial equipment.
A fabrication shop is a place where fabrication work is done. It operates similar to a machine shop but with more complex fabrication processes. Fabrication shops are usually small fabrication facilities at major manufacturing plants. They provide fabrication, repair, fabrication and assembly of structural components needed for the production process.
Frequently these shops fabricate large pieces of machinery such as ship hulls, aeroplane fuselages and space shuttle fuel tanks. They may also build smaller equipment for use on the shop floor or in other fabrication areas.
Metal fabrication includes cutting the metal into various shapes to make products using welded construction techniques or bolt fasteners. Welding is used in the assembling of metal parts into larger structures with high strength-to-weight ratios. Metal fabrication projects could include everything from a ship propeller shaft to an aluminium light pole base.
