How does powder coating work?

Powder coating is used in the manufacture of metal products and fabrication. Powder coating is based on the principle that objects with opposite electric charges attract one another. Particles are negatively charged by passing through a special spraying gun. This results in an electric field between the spray gun and the earthed product. The powder particle then follows the field line and adheres to the product. The component is then baked at between 160 – 200 degrees centigrade for approximately 20 minutes. Complex metal components can be powder coated with excellent adhesion results. The heat of the oven causes a chemical reaction to occur and the powder to cure creating a highly durable finish, the thickness of the finish is approximately 70 microns. Powder coating resists cracking, and peeling and is extremely abrasive, corrosion and chemical resistant.

SteriTouch

Our Healthcare range of pedal bins are powder coated using powder with an antimicrobial additive. This additive called SteriTouch is mixed with the powder and applied to the pedal bins during the painting process. This additive has been tested for use in preventing the spreads of MRSA and E.Coli related bugs.

Powder Coating Quality Control

Taltech Engineering sheet metal work uses quality powders supplied by recognized manufacturers and process metal components through a modern paint system. Different types of powders are used depending on whether the product is used indoors or outdoors . Regular quality checks are made along with stringent spot checks which are carried out by qualified staff.

This ensures that the components are stoved correctly to specification.
Thickness Test: This ensures that there is sufficient powder applied to meet the protect requirements.
Visual Check: Visual checks to make sure components are free from contamination and the finish is even.
Adhesion Check: This destructive test is carried on sample plates which are processed with each batch to determine that the powder has adhered to the product properly.

Is powder coated steel rust proof?

Yes, powder coated metal cannot rust because it has been oxidized during the powder coating process. Metal painted with a powder coating (e.g. steel) is highly resistant to rust, preventing unsightly rust patches and red streaks on outdoor surfaces such as patios or facades of buildings. If damaged, however, small cracks can form in the paint for moisture to seep into and rust to form.

Provided there is no damage or cracks then yes it is waterproof

Does powder coated steel scratch?

Powder coating may be a solid, protective coating for metal surfaces. However, as with any surface, it’s vulnerable to damage including scratches

There are several ways powder coating powder coatings can develop surface scratches. The first is actually caused by the powder itself. Powder particles can scratch powder coatings, especially if not properly filtered prior to application or if there are more than a few large particles in the powder mixture.

How does powder coat stick to metal?

The powder that is applied in powder coating sticks to a metal surface due to the powder’s rough surface. As powder is incorporated into the powder coat, it lies over imperfections in the metal itself and provides an almost flawless bonding surface.

What surfaces can be powder coated?

Surfaces that are commonly powder coated include: steel, copper, aluminum, zinc and magnesium. Additional more expensive metals such as titanium or nickel alloys may also be powder coated for various applications. In addition to these metals being able to withstand powder coating techniques, certain plastics can also withstand powder coatings as well (such as polyethylene).

How long does it take to powder coat something?

In order for a piece of metal with a thickness of a few millimeters to powder coat, it can take up to 1 hour. Larger pieces with thicker metal may need longer powder coating time as powder coating thickness is also dependent upon the powder that is used for applying the powder coating paint process.

How long will powder coated paint last?

Metal that has been powder coated can last for years. However it’s longevity depends on the environment that it’s in. For example a powder coated metal sign in a car park may last longer than powder coated metal signs that are used outdoors.

Can galvanized sheet metal be powder coated?

Yes powder coatings can be applied successfully to hot dip galvanized surfaces  using powder coatings that contain Zinc Chromate.

Can an Aluminium sheet be powder coated?
